New ancient architecture in Binh Thuan
Two ancient brick walls located inside Po Dam Tower of Cham people in Phu Lac Commune, Tuy Phong District. The walls are located at a height of 37m above sea level and are 190cm high, 65cm thick with 245cm of space between them. In between the walls are flat brick layers with huge stones beneath to prevent landslides.
“After initial examination, researchers recognize that the walls were the same color, size and had the same adhesive as the tower’s body,” said Nguyen Xuan Ly added.
“It also proves that these walls were filled up a long time ago as even the oldest Cham people hadn’t heard of them,” Ly added. Thus, the artifacts may be dated at the same time as the tower which was built in the eighth century.
However, scientists haven’t reached a conclusion regarding the walls’ functions. Some say this is the South gate leading to the tower. Earlier, workers who were preserving the tower discovered the brick walls underground. However, Binh Thuan Museum halted the process to carry out the excavation.
