KHMER CUISINE IN SOC TRANG- MEKONG ECO TOUR

Soc Trang is definitely a fantastic stop by in your tours to Vietnam, when coming to this place, you will not only have the chance to admire the beauty of Khmer temples, but also many historic and tourists destinations and most importantly, the wonderful world of Khmer cuisine of the region.

Firstly, dish has to have in list is broth rice Vermicelli (Bún nước lèo). The special thing about this recipe is the broth because it always looks clear, no dregs at all. First, add Bò Hóc sauce (mắm bò hóc – this sauce is really unique and can only be found in the area of ASEAN), add water then boil it. During the cooking process, you must remove all the foam. Snakehead fish is cleaned, boiled and bone-removed. The bone will be put in a mortar and crushed with Sagebrush and citronella, then extract the juice and pour into the broth. Adjust the taste.

Next is tube cake in Sóc Trăng style (Bánh ống Sóc Trăng). The cake is made from grinded rice powder mixed with panda leaves, sugar and coconut milk. Back in the old times, the cake mold is made from the bamboo but nowadays people use steel tubes for sanitary purpose.

Finally but not last, Khmer flat glutinous rice “Com dep” is a specialty of the Khmer in Soc Trang in general and Mekong River Delta in particular.  The Khmer believe that they owe the Jade Emperor and Buddha for giving them rice, which is the main material to make delicious dishes. “Com dep” is a popular dish being offered in important Khmer religious rituals to pray to genies for favorable weather and bumper crops.
